Absolute must-buy for abstract strategy fans
To get it out if the way, the board itself sucks. Thankfully it's just a 6x6 grid, and the game itself is so good you'll be tempted to make your own. This is a criminally overlooked game. It scratches the same itch as chess, but adds in just enough randomness that it takes away the ability of supergeniuses to whoop you every time. And that small amount of randomness is FUN. Some of these pieces have the coolest abilities, and the fact that you never know what piece you'll pull out means every game is different than the one before. It's simple enough to be taught to children - the pieces have their movement styles printed directly on them, and the strategy involved rarely goes thinking beyond 2-3 moves ahead - yet, it's still deep enough to satisy even hardened veterans of the hobby. Also, the solid wood tiles are great. Zero criticisms of the components outside of the board. And since it's just a grid, hell, find you a stone table at a park somewhere, make it yourself with chalk, and strike up a game with a local older bird watcher/chess player type. It'll be way more fun than chess for the 99.99% of people that can't compete in serious tournaments. Can't recommend this enough. Buy it, and help bring it to what should be it's proper place in boardgame history.

Like Chess, but for dummies
First time i saw this game it was at a local tap-house. Bartender suggested my buddy and I play it, said it was similar to chess, but without having to have all the movements memorized. We played and I bought it shortly after getting home that evening. The board is nice and sturdy and having wooden pieces makes sure this will last a long time. No issues with misaligned printing like some others have commented on, so maybe the QC has gotten better. Overall a great game that's pretty easy to play and learn.

A interesting take on chess
A great game. We have had a lot of fun learning and playing this game. The flipping tile mechanic adds a nice spin to the strategy. My only complaint would be the board is laminated and creased a LOT, so that it does not stay flat well. Additionally, the wood tiles are stained, but not all the same color; i.e., the dark pieces are all different shades of dark. That being said, I still highly recommend this game for any chess lovers looking for a new twist.

Great alternative to chess with better flavor
I already had the Jarl and figured this would be the same. Boy was I wrong. Very little is the same and I love this chess like game that has a lot of strategy to it. Only thing I do not like is the length of time a game takes when two people play that really think strategically. But that is a minor downside to such a great game!

Great game, Missing piece
Great strategy game, way more in-depth then chess. The only issue is that I received 2 Duke pieces in one color without a General piece. Not the end of the world, we just play without the General.

My son's FAVORITE game ever!!!
This game is fantastic. Full of clever strategy and easily marked on the pieces so you always know how to plan your next move.

Chess with fun variables
This is a great strategy game for 2 players. Think of chess but with different pieces and more variables.

Quality Control
Great game but the first thing I did was open the box and double check the tiles as many people have mentioned print errors and quality control issues. Im grateful that I didn't have any misprints or missing pieces but I did get a warped seer (3rd picture) and footman with smudges (1st picture). I was able clean up the footman with an exacto knife (2nd picture) but it removed the clear coat to get it fixed.Great shogi variant but double check every single piece FRONT AND BACK to make sure it's not jacked up.
