This product had LED lighting and is covered by lifetime warranty. Contact the seller for a warranty replacement.

Q: What is the depth of field or how close do you have to hold the magnifier to the subject to keep in focus?

It depends on how strong your vision is without the magnifier. I wear reading glasses and I can keep an image in focus (words) holding it about 4 inches from the images. I hope that helps.

Q: Does the magnifier work without the light? My 89 year father wants to use it with an iPad.

You don't need to use a magnifier with an iPad because you can easily enlarge everything on the screen. Tap the screen with three fingers twice and then on the third time spread your fingers out and everything is enlarged to what ever size you want the text and pictures. You can adjust the size by spreading your fingers in and out. To go back to normal size, do the tapping again, but on the third time bring your fingers back together. For the people using this magnifier with their computer, if you have a PC, in Windows under "View" use "zoom" to enlarge everything. I know you can enlarge things on the screen on an Apple computer, but I don't know how. I have this magnifier in 4x and it is very useful when I am away from home and need to read things at the store.
