2 pack with lids

So, I got the 2 pack with lids because I had two different uses for them. First, I wanted a nice big tray to grow some cat grass for my fur baby. It does the job as well as any sprouting tray I've used, it feels nice and sturdy, and the bottom tray is deep enough for the grass to develop pretty good roots without drowning. The seeds I had sprouted in 4 days (not 5 like I expected), even though I didn't really rinse and drain them as often as I was supposed to. I think that's because I used the lid, which trapped the humid air inside and kept the seeds moist with very little effort on my part. The other use I had in mind, though, was unconventional. I just bought an RV and will be living in it half-time with my cat. I use pine litter, so I needed a litter tray that would let me sift out the sawdust and keep the good litter on top. Regular sifting litterboxes are made for clay litter, so the holes tend to be much smaller, and they're designed in such a way that you keep the stuff that falls through the holes and throw away the stuff left on top. Pine litter is the exact opposite, and it requires larger holes. In my house, I use the (large and pricy) Happy Cat sifting litter box, which is fantastic, but not really compatible with the smaller space of a motor home. But this little tray is just right. It fits in an unobtrusive corner, my cat took to it immediately, and the holes are just the right size to let the sawdust fall through without clogging. Now, I have a pretty small cat. She's full-grown but only weighs 8.5lbs, and she's short (both lengthwise and height - AFAIK she's not a munchkin breed, but I wouldn't be surprised if she had some in her lineage, either). So this definitely wouldn't work for a larger cat. She's also a real princess about her potty usage and isn't prone to scattering litter. And the amount of litter that will fit in this tray is fairly small -- I expect to scoop and sift daily, but so far I haven't had to do so *more* than once a day. You *do* have to put the lid on before you shake and sift, or you'll get sawdust and pine pellets everywhere, but that's zero percent a problem for me. I also put the lid on and secure it with a file band when I'm in motion so that I don't have to worry about spillage.I expected to have to attach a small support to the center of the upper tray to keep it from bowing under my cat's weight, but it doesn't bend at all when she steps on it. It feels surprisingly sturdy, and the plastic is lightweight but thick and not brittle. All in all, much better quality than I expected for the price. If you've got a small space and a small cat who is tidy when using the litterbox, these seed sprouting trays are worth a look as an alternative solution. I can see them being really useful for kittens who are too small to climb over the edge of the Happy Cat box (which is pretty tall, actually) or maybe even older cats with mobility issues. And they're less than half the price! I'm very pleased with them and may end up buying more to donate to my local cat shelter before "Kitten Season" in the spring.

Easy to use

These sprouting trays work perfectly. Produces lots of yummy sprouts to enjoy. I would like to have some replacement screens.

Bigger than expected

This product comes with two trays for easy stacking which is a great feature that I have not taken advantage of yet. I have started with just one level and the seeds grow wonderfully. The holes in the tray allow for easy root access to the water, and the lid that comes with it provides from greenhouse effect that lets them grow fast. I thought from the pictures that the trays would be smaller. It is larger than expected so takes up more counter space that I thought it would, so just be mindful of the size when ordering.

Growing Cat Grass

After a little trial-and-error, works well. I am growing cat-grass, which is a larger type of seed. This is what gets good results: 1) Don't bother with the fine mesh sheet included with the product. 2) Fill the bottom tray half-full of water. 3) Sprinkle the seed across the seed tray in a single layer. Areas where seed is stacked even a tad will not grow. 4) Spray the seeds generously with water. If they seem water logged, tap the bottom of the seed tray lightly to make the excess drip through. 4) Place the seed tray over the water tray and add the clear cover. 5) I put the tray on a grow shelf, spraying the seeds generously each day and changing the water every other day. 6) After several days, the seeds start sprouting. When a bunch of sprouts reach the top of the clear cover, I remove the cover permantly. In 2-3 more days, the tray is filled with beatiful deep green sprouts. 6) When most of the seeds have sprouted, I start adding a drop or two of liquid fertilizer to the water, which still gets changed at least every other day. Once grown, The bundled roots lock the sprouts in so the cat can't just yank them out of the tray (or not most of them anyway).

Fabulous Trays for Growing Cat Grass! A++

The media could not be loaded. I began growing grass for my cats and dogs about a month ago.Since I hadn't anticipated the high demand, the small trays I purchased couldn't grow enough grass to keep my babies satisfied.Well...I upgraded to these large trays and couldn't be happier!I used the very same seed mix as before (same bag) for these trays and am blown away by how quickly the seeds germinated and grew. The cover seems to create a humid microclimate that seedlings like, leading to ultra fast growth!Once the blades touched the lid, I removed it and kept spritzing water on the grass every day.Today is day 6 and the blades of grass are around 5.5" tall! I harvested the first batch this morning, and my dogs/cats loved it.Some of the seeds in my mix are really small and fall through the holes. These trays came with a screen, which I haven't used yet. I plan to experiment with the next batch, using the screen for a day or two, during the sprouting phase only, to see if it helps the tiny seed in the mix survive and thrive. These two trays were a wonderful investment. I plan to begin a new tray every week so there's always fresh grass on hand.If you like to grow cat grass or microgreens, I highly recommend this product.
