Q: Does anyone know how to recalibrate this? because it's telling me that my ro water has a tds of 1700ppm

You cant. It works perfectly fine it's the tap water levels. Try testing your bottled water. See if it doesnt do that. If so send it back for a newer one.

what did the tap water tds read? what did the fridge filtered water tds read? what did the water drop filter tds? If you cannot get a sample of reverse osmosis water to test (it should read about 40 tds or less), get some distilled water from a pharmacy to test. This will give you a baseline. I would not expect any of the drip style or cartridge style refrigerator filters will do much to remove hardness as they tend to rely on activated carbon which is better at removing chlorine (among other chemicals) and organic compounds.

Q: Can this meter display a negative (-) reading, which would be expected for alkaline water?

This is a parts per million meter. It goes from zero to some number. It measures the concentration of particulates in the water. PH meters measure acidity and alkalinity. Numbers below 7 are acid, above 7 is alkaline
