Q: What would you say is the average life of this cartridge? How many months and gallons? Thanks

Family of 4 here but I seem to get 4-5 months on my city water before starting to notice buildup in the toilets and showers again

Q: Should I install this filter after my water softener?

I would install it before softener and after preasure reducing valve. Side note, of you are on a septic system I would be hesitant to install a softener as the majority of them add alot of salt and water to the system. I'm on a septic and had scale problems so we added the Express Water antiscale system which has three filters; sediment, charcoal, & polyphosphate. It made a huge difference, didn't totally solve the problem, maybe 90/95% better. Good luck

It will help but it will not it eliminate completely.
