Q: Is this battery powered within the trolley or dc or ac into the track? Can you add a few extra track pieces and if so do you know the part number ?

Battery powered. You can also shut off the music which is helpful. I did not look to add tracks so I do not know.

Q: Can it be used with a 4.5 adaptor?

This can not be used with an adaptor as the batteries go into the trolley which actually moves along the tracks.

Q: The trolley does go back and forth then correct?

Trolley runs continuously in a forward and reverse direction. There is a video on their page that shows it going back and forth.
