Works with VMware VM, but won't power itself back up after a power outage
I bought this to rehome a bunch of disks I had in an ESXi server that were attached to a Windows VM. It does work for that, though I'd note a couple of points:1) The VM needs to have a USB3 controller2) The entire device gets mapped to one VM, there's no way to spread the disks across different VMs if you wanted to do that (though I expect that could be worked around by using network shares). Thanks to other reviews I was aware of the rather aggressive sleep mode, but for my use case it isn't actually a problem, and I'm glad for the power savings. What *is* a problem is that the enclosure won't power itself back on after a power outage. That shouldn't be a problem, as I have a UPS; but UPSs are unreliable things :( The ESXi host is configured to restart on power resumption, and the VM then auto starts, but if the button hasn't been pressed on the enclosure the drives are missing (causing some apps to recheck their files when things come back). The workaround is to hold the power button down with some tape/blu-tac, which isn't elegant, but seems to do the trick.I was impressed with the build quality and ease of installation.

Worked flawlessly on Ubuntu server with MergerFS
Formatted my drives to EXT4 and added to the enclosure, plugged in to my Ubuntu Server (Intel NUC 8) and turned it on, it picked it up immediately. Mounted the drive in fstab and added it to a MergerFS and it's working perfectly. Fans are audible but behind my cupboard door, I can't hear it.

KEEPS GOING TO SLEEP!
Great enclosure, really easy to install drives and an absolute bargain.HOWEVER... It's virtually unusable as it continually goes to sleep and brings my otherwise high performance computer to a standstill as it wakes up every time I want to do something.

If you run a Home Theatre PC, these are excellent for your media library drives.
Anyone who runs a multi-drive media library knows, that there always comes a time when you have to do housekeeping on the library. As my library grew, I ended up with several external Seagate drives, each with its own power supply and data cable. The day finally came when I powered everything down, split open the Seagate plastic caddies, and put the naked drives into one of these ORICO 5Bay Hard Drive Enclosures, and it was the best thing I could have done. There are lots of multi-bay hard drive enclosures out there. But this Orico version does not look so 'industrial'. It does not look out-of-place in a Games Room, or even a Living Room. The magnetic lid is easy to remove, if you have to swap drives, or place a couple in a cloner dock. For me, the highlights are that the unit runs virtually silent. There is a fan inside, but the vertical drives run cool anyway. My whole set-up is now super tidy, after I was able to get rid of all the individual power supplies and cables. Data transfer is also a lot faster, as I am now transferring at SATA speeds rather than USB, within the enclosure. I was worried the front information lights might be a bit bright, but they are actually quite discreet. They seem to be refracting light from LEDs hidden inside the unit, rather than actual LEDs mounted on the front, which is perfect. My drive monitoring software shows the hard drives remain pretty constant at 45 degrees centigrade. In fact, there are only two features missing from this enclosure, which are not deal breakers, but are still greatly missed. The first is the (lack of) ability to daisy chain these units. Even a single rear USB3 socket would have been welcome, so you could link multiple bays. The second missing feature I would have liked, would have been a front mounted USB3 socket, to make memory stick backups or MP3 player updates easier. A shame they are missing, but maybe that is what helps keep the price down. For the money, this enclosure is excellent.
